Alongside the cultural inspiration found in the beautiful town of St. Ives and its nearby beaches, there’s also plenty to keep you energised right here on the doorstep of Castle Village. Tregenna Castle offers a wealth of activities and experiences for both adults and children, some more active than others, but each one generating a great deal of fun for all the family.
The Estate offers 72 acres of secret gardens and woodlands to explore with something to inspire the mind and movements of people of all ages within and around the Castle grounds. The Resort also has a great partnership with local surf schools dotted along the Cornish coast, so if you fancy a lesson, you will be standing in no time.
Enjoy a dip all year round in the indoor swimming pool and our outdoor heated pool between May – September. Knock a ball over the net at the outdoor tennis courts, just a short walk from Castle Village. If you really have an eye for a challenge, The 9 hole, par 3 Golf Course provides a challenging ensemble. As one of the most scenic courses in the country, it offers spectacular views to relax your eyes as they veer off the ball between holes.
Food
Finish off a fun fuelled day with a bite to eat in Tregenna Castle’s Restaurant, Godrevy View, offering an exciting collection of sumptuous menus inspired by international cuisine whilst showcasing local produce. Fish freshly caught by the fisherman that day, and cheese produced by some of Cornwall’s award-winning producers, the kitchen go that extra mile to bring you the very best of local ingredients. Don’t forget to pop in for a cocktail or two at Olives too. Serving lunches and a wonderful ambient atmosphere, it is the perfect spot for a chilled or hot drink overlooking the bay at Tregenna.
The History
Overlooking the dreamy seaside town of St. Ives with breathtaking views of some of Cornwall’s finest beaches that greet its famous coastline is Tregenna Castle – a wealth of history constantly in the making.
Its native name alone holds a special meaning of “the dwelling at the entrance” that originates from an Irish maiden who once crossed the ocean to reach this enchanted land. The name itself comes from the hill in which it resides, and from years ago was most likely chosen for its suitable prominence to keep watch for marauders.
In 1774, Samuel Stephens, Esquire of St Ives built Tregenna Castle as his home with architect John Wood of Bath, and master builder Daniel Freeman of Penryn. Built using local granite, it originally only had twelve bedrooms, whereby a further ten were added in 1844 to create the magnificent mansion it is today. It remained in the Stephens family until 1888, whereby it was sold and a new chapter in history began. Rented by Great Western Railway, Tregenna Castle became a hotel for the first time for visitors travelling on the main line from St. Erth to St. Ives. Today, the hotel still bestows many of its original features, alongside the transformations that have seen it become one of Cornwall’s most treasured hotels with wonderful panoramic views overlooking its famous coastline.
